DISTRICT TARTAN KILTS
There is
no question about it. The best and most dramatic way for you to show your
pride in your tartan is to wear it in a kilt. We are dedicated to bringing
you the highest quality in craftsmanship. Each kilt we sell is entirely
hand pleated, hand stitched, and tailor made to your measurements by some of the
finest and most experienced Scottish kilt makers.
Because each kilt is made to measure, and many options are available as far as tartan, color scheme, kilt weight, and pleating, we are not able to offer our kilts via a "one-click" Pay Pal shopping cart system. To order your kilt, it is best to phone us at (828)524-7472 between the hours of 10am and 5pm Monday through Saturday, or email us at info@district-tartans.com for more information.
To place your order, we will need the following information from you:
Your desired tartan -- this is most important!
The weight range of your cloth
Your waist measurement, taken at your natural waist (just above your naval), snug
Your hip measurement, taken at the widest part of your seat, loose
The length of your kilt. This is measured while kneeling, both knees on the floor, back straight (please get someone else to take this measurement for you). Measure from about an inch above your naval (or two inches above the top of your hip bone) straight down to the floor. Subtract one inch. This will make the kilt fall to the middle of your knee and is the longest you will want it. You may subtract another inch to have the kilt fall at the top of your knee cap, and another inch again to have it fall above the knee. This is as short as you will want it.
Double take all measurements. We will have your kilt made to the measurements you provide. We cannot be responsible if the measurements you give us are not correct.
Give us your height and weight. This helps in double-checking your measurements.
Do you want your kilt pleated to sett or stripe? Pleating to the sett is most common today, and means the pattern of the tartan is reproduced in the pleats. Pleating to stripe, also called pleating to the line, or regimental pleating, is common in the military and pipe bands, but also looks good for civilian use. This is where a particular stripe from your tartan is centered on each pleat. Depending on what stripe is chosen, this can have different effects. We can pleat your kilt to whatever stripe you specify.
Do you have a deadline? Kilts normally take 8 to 10 weeks to have made and delivered. Sometimes this can be longer if the cloth is out of stock, but you will be notified.
Your shipment and payment information. On all custom made goods, a 50% deposit is required at the time you place the order. The remaining 50% is due when the kilt is ready to ship. You may also choose to pre-pay up front.

The price of the kilt depends upon the weight of the tartan you select. Not every tartan is available in every weight range. Please refer to the availability charts below. All of our kilts are made from 100% worsted wool, twill weave. Eight yard kilts are priced for gentlemen with hips 46" and under. Nine yard kilts are priced for gentlemen with hips over 46". Some larger sizes may be subject to additional surcharge if a 10 or 11 yard kilt is required. Sample swatches of any cloth can be sent to you for a $5.00 fee.
Accessories such as fly plaids, piper's and drummer's plaids, and tartan garters are available in all of the tartans listed below and priced on request.
